Free Comic Book Day 2026: A New Era for the Industry's Best Day

Free Comic Book Day 2026: A New Era for the Industry's Best Day

Free Comic Book Day happened Saturday May 2. About 2,000 comic shops across North America handed out roughly 5 million comics. That number alone tells you the event is still healthy. What makes 2026 different is the story behind it.

Diamond Collapsed, FCBD Did Not

For most of FCBD's history, Diamond Comic Distributors was the single source for the event. Shops ordered from Diamond, Diamond shipped, that was it. When Diamond hit the wall this past year, a lot of people in the industry were waiting to see if FCBD was going down with it.

It did not. FCBD 2026 ran with two parallel "Comics Giveaway Day" distributor systems operating side-by-side at participating shops. Lunar carrying some publishers, PRH and others picking up the rest, Diamond still moving what it could. The community adapted with very little drama. Day-of went off about as well as anyone could have hoped.

What People Were Grabbing

The 2026 lineup leaned accessible. Amazing Spider-Man and X-Men anchored Marvel. DC went with a Sonic crossover and DC Next Level titles tied to Zatanna's launch. Image showed up with Something is Killing the Children. Sonic the Hedgehog #1 from IDW. Locke & Key got a reprint. Vault put out Dungeon Crawler Carl. The lineup was newcomer-friendly, which is the whole point.

Where We Land

We sat this one out for 2026. We were not in a position to commit the inventory and the floor space FCBD really needs to do right, and we would rather miss a year than do it half-hearted. Watching from the outside, FCBD did what it always does. Kids walked out of shops with stacks of comics, lapsed readers grabbed #1s, and people who care about this medium were reminded why.

We are planning to be in the mix for FCBD 2027, and trust us when we say...it will be a heck of a first year for us!

Come Talk About It

If you went to a shop on Saturday and grabbed something good, come tell us what it was. We want to hear what landed and what did not. The state of the industry is shifting and we are paying attention.
