Ravenloft: The Horrors Within Deep Dive

Ravenloft: The Horrors Within Preorder Deep Dive

Ravenloft: The Horrors Within drops June 16 and preorders are live. Here's what's actually in the book, what's getting the most attention, and why this one's on the short list for the biggest D&D release of 2026.

What's in the Box

Four playable species: Dhampir, Hexblood, Lupin, and Reborn. Three of those return from the 2021 Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. Lupin (werewolf-flavored) is new to the 2024 rules set.

Seven subclasses, all pulled from the Horror Subclasses Unearthed Arcana playtest that ran last year. Reanimator Artificer and Hollow Warden Ranger are brand new. The rest are updated takes on fan favorites: College of Spirits Bard, Grave Domain Cleric, Phantom Rogue, Shadow Sorcerer, and Undead Patron Warlock.

Sixteen Domains of Dread, including a brand new Lovecraftian domain called Innsmouth. Seventeen Darklords, each with full stat blocks and lore. A bestiary with 41 other monsters and domain denizens. Plus seventeen one-shot adventures built into the book, ready to run.

The Cthulhu Thing

Biggest talking point in the RPG community right now is Cthulhu. He is in this book, as a Darklord. First time he's officially shown up in Ravenloft. Community reaction is mixed. Some players are excited for the cosmic-horror expansion. Others feel it dilutes Ravenloft's identity as a gothic-horror setting. The new Innsmouth domain leans hard into the Lovecraft mythos alongside him.

I see both sides. Ravenloft has always pulled from outside gothic horror when it made sense, and the Dark Powers themselves are already a cosmic concept. A Cthulhu Darklord is a layup of a campaign hook. But if you're a purist about gothic-only Ravenloft, this is a real shift in tone.

The Take

This is the first D&D campaign book under the 2024 rules that actually feels designed for 2024. Four species, seven subclasses, sixteen domains, seventeen Darklords, seventeen one-shots, cosmic horror as a proper option. It's a full toolkit for an entire "Season of Horror" campaign, not just a setting guide.

If you're running any horror-adjacent game, this one is on your shelf. If you're a player, Dhampir plus Phantom Rogue is the no-brainer combo of the year.

Preorder is open through release. We can get a copy on order for you if you want one locked in. Companion products (Tarokka Deck, DM Screen, Map Pack) release alongside the main book.
